The Climate Action Challenge
Climate change is a global, national, regional, and local challenge. The local impacts of climate change have so far been relatively modest. However, significant large-scale impacts are expected in the form of increased precipitation, higher temperatures, rising sea levels, increased extreme weather events, and more weather variability.
The release of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide from fossil fuel consumption and methane, along with deforestation are regarded as the primary causes of human induced global warming.
Local governments need to be prepared for and adapt to these changes, and work to mitigate and eliminate local and regional emissions that contribute to climate change.
Where Do We Start?
It’s simple really, our carbon emissions stem from 3 things, our homes, our transportation and our waste. The issue is energy; how we use it and how smart choices can manage it. Saanich is providing the tools to residents, businesses and the rest of the community through the Saanich CLEAR Plan.
The municipality is in the process of putting together a climate action road map for the community to tackle these issues. The plan itself will be powered by input from residents and business.
